The war broke out in the capital, Khartoum, central Sudan, in mid-April 2023. Overnight, the situation changed; soldiers were scattered around and heavy weapons were lowered into the ground. From complete silence to warplanes flying over homes. From complete safety, we had to leave the house due to the intensification of the aerial bombardment, and so my displacement journey began.
I travelled from the center of Sudan to the far northern borders in an unsuccessful attempt to escape the country. This resulted in me moving to more than ten cities in Sudan in order to find a new home. I discovered my country’s culture, diversity, customs, and traditions. I saw some historical sites, by chance, but for the first time. I became closer to the concept of homeland through understanding the history and heritage of Sudan.
Communities far away and different from mine welcomed us, took care of us, and made the hardship of war and displacement easier. War, Peace and Soul in between is a reflection of this reality.
