An exhibition of the Gender Violations and Violence Storytelling
Project by the North West Department of Social Development with support from the Market Photo Workshop
Curated by: Thandile Zwelibanzi
The Market Photo Workshop and the Department of Social Development in the North West engaged in the Gender Violations and Violence Story Telling Project, which created a public voice and discussion around contemporary issues using media and photography practice in the North West Province. The project included campaigns of a multi-layered agenda that responded to “real” matters like gender-based violence and gender inequality, arising from the contemporary contexts in South Africa through photography and media. The exhibition is work of 20 women reflecting their lived experiences in the hope of stimulating dialogue and raising awareness on gender-based violence, not only for their immediate communities but also further afield as such challenges, which sometimes stifle agency, exist within numerous communities around South Africa.
