Nkosi’s Haven/artsINSIDEOUT Photography Training Workshops at the Market Photo Workshop
Market Photo Workshop partnered with artsINSIDEOUT to conduct three-months of weekly workshops for the residents at Nkosi’s Haven. The workshops trained six Nkosi’s Haven teens in photography and visual literacy. Through the workshops, participants were trained to conceptualise and develop projects, stories and voice around their communities’ defining aspects.
The workshops developed activities around skills development, vocational training and empowering strategies to encourage a greater participation which will ensure that the participating youths critically engage with pertinent social issues through photography.
The resulting photographs reflect new and innovative ways of using photography as a tool for positive social change, creating bodies of work on social and community issues. The participating youths were encouraged to develop projects in a way that resonates with target audiences, encourages community engagement, and has a meaningful and lasting impact on the communities or issues addressed in the images.

Nkosi’s Haven
Nkosi’s Haven, a recognized NGO in South Africa since its founding in 1999, offers holistic care and support for destitute HIV/AIDS infected mothers, their children, and resulting AIDS orphans (infected or not), as well as to mothers and children who are victims of gender based violence (GBV). Nkosi’s Haven is named after Nkosi Johnson, the young AIDS activist who passed away on International Children’s Day on June 1st 2001. It continues his legacy by fighting HIV/AIDS stigma, and keeping families together in the face of HIV/AIDS and GBV.
