Unveiling the Minibus World: A Prelude to Urban Exploration

This project serves as an introductory glimpse into the intricacies of Lilongwe’s minibus ecosystem, offering a compelling narrative of urban life in motion. Through a captivating blend of photography and storytelling, viewers are transported into the pulsating heart of the city’s transport network.

At the core of this exploration lies the dynamic minibus ranks, where a symphony of activity unfolds under the watchful eyes of the boys who oversee the flow of vehicles with unwavering precision and authority. Yet, beyond their role as conductors of the chaos, these boys embody the resilience and resourcefulness of Lilongwe’s urban fabric.

Often dismissed as a nuisance, these boys play a crucial role in maintaining order within the ranks. Answerable to their leaders, they ensure that order and security prevail amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. Their lives, though seemingly ordinary, are a testament to the silent heroes who shape the rhythms of the city.

As this initial exploration sets the stage for a deeper dive into the minibus world, future projects will delve into the multifaceted lives of these boys and the broader implications of urban transport in Lilongwe and beyond.

Kumudzi by Kondwani Jere

The project documents how Kumudzi Cooperative provides a lifeline for the quarry workers of Bunda in Malawi, while strengthening the community’s resilience, enabling them to build a more secure and prosperous future together. After years of working for various companies that once operated the Bunda Quarry, the workers united to create Kumudzi, a cooperative that empowers them to take control of the quarry and their livelihoods. The cooperative ensures fair access to quarry resources, fostering a sense of ownership and equality among its members.
