Botswana Trans Initiative by Neo Mokgosi
While Botswana experiences fewer cases of violent attacks and hate crimes against the LGBTQIA+ community in comparison to more openly homophobic African countries, there is still a large gap between the understanding and attitudes of the general public towards the needs and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community. The Botswana Trans Initiative project focuses on the advocacy work, which involves sensitising and educating the public, public servants and medical practitioners about the difference between sex and gender, and highlighting the specific needs of the transgender and gender-nonconforming community, who often are drowned out in the larger LGBT discussion.
