Thobeka Nzwana

BIOGRAPHY

Thobeka Nzwana is an aspiring photographer based in Thokoza, Johannesburg.

Originally from Cape Town, she moved to Johannesburg in 2008, and joined the Of Soul and Joy photography project in 2017. She has a keen interest in documenting black people’s stories. In 2018, through the OF Soul and Joy project, she was awarded a bursary to study towards the Foundation Course in Photography at Market Photo Workshop and subsequently completed the Intermediate Course in documentary photography. Nzwana is currently doing the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Programme at the Market Photo Workshop.

In 2018, Nzwana's first work, titled ‘Sebenza girl; was part of a group exhibition at Stop Sign Art gallery in Johannesburg. The work focused on celebrating Black women in their various workspaces in her community. Nzwana is currently working on a project in Phola Park where she resides. Nzwana is looking at the living of people who live in the Informal Settlements {squatter camps} in her community, who are facing the challenges of chasing wires {izinyoka-nyoka} in their daily lifes, the danger of the illegal electricity.
