Fezeka Jacqueline Mophethe

BIOGRAPHY

Fezeka Jacqueline Mophethe is a photography focused visual artist, based in Vosloorus, the east of Johannesburg. She completed the Advanced Programme in Photography at the Market Photo Workshop in 2020. Fezeka has also completed two of their other photography programmes, the Foundation Course in Photography and the Intermediate Course in Photography in 2019.

Mophethe started exploring photography with taking pictures of herself and things around her using her cellphone. Her mother bought her a camera in late September of 2018, her love for photography grew and she then got fascinated with self-portraiture and street photography. Both these modes assist in marking her voice in authoring to be audible and precise. Her work focuses on her life experience and people around her. The photographers that inspire her work are Carrie Mae Weems, Cindy Sherman, Vivian Maier and Charity Vilakazi.

Mophethe has a body of work named ‘UBHUHLE BAM’ (my beauty) where she uses the mode of self- portraiture to speak about a colourism phase in her teenage life and how she overcame it.

She showed this work as one of the artists for the first east rand CLASH OF THE MEDIUMS group exhibition in 2019.
