VHUSIKU NDI DADA LIA LUMA is a project that looks into the psychology behind the idea of being safe. It wishes to explore how crime affects us whether we have experienced it or have heard of it happening far and near. I believe it is because of the many times we have heard or experienced terrifying things happening in the night that makes us want to be indoors when it’s nighttime or makes us want to tighten security, lock our doors and activate all the security measures we have. All these give us peace of mind and almost guarantee a stress-free life. The title of the project is a Tshivenda saying that has been used many times and is also built on what people have seen or heard about the night. Translated to English this saying means “The night is a dangerous monster”. The project happens in and around the complex where I currently stay (Alan Manor) and during the night. It looks at the safety measures that people put around their homes to try and be safe and also the empty streets at night or even the busyness of the streets in the night but mostly how people are reacting to crime. The project will also look into my personal experience, being from Venda and moving into Johannesburg, which is a bigger city with a broader variety of people and a completely different space. The project will look into how my new setting influences my views on crime and how I respond to crime in different environments. This is a significant project for me because it speaks to an issue that everyone can relate to. We speak and think about it every day of our lives because it affects us in many ways…
